How is art perceived and understood within society ? What perspectives do social theorists offer on the role and significance of contemporary art ? Despite its universality, art is an uneasy philosophical and anthropological concept. Its complexity stems from its capacity to reflect, refract, or absorb the social world it aims to portray, while being determined by its functioning. Led by a visual anthropologist, this seminar examines art (including design, performance, and curating) as a productive source of reflection for social theorists, from sociologists to feminist and decolonial scholars.
