This course is an introduction to international trade. We first look at the history of world trade: what kind of goods were being traded, what was the impact on workers, and what changed and made international trade into what we know today. We will then explore some important concepts in trade: comparative advantage, the political economy of trade restrictions (tariffs), what the World Trade Organization is and what it does. The class will end by looking into international trade’s interactions with other broader topics such as environmental issues, fair trade, or child labour.
